IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute is an independent, non-profit research institute, established in 1966 and owned by a foundation jointly established by the Swedish Government and Swedish industry. Number of employees now exceeds 200.

IVL works with applied research and contract assignments in the entire environmental field. The activities include climate issues, environmental technology, indoor environment, waste management, working environment, environmental measurements and environmental quality evaluation.  It also performs studies of environmental effects in air, water and soil and has its own accredited laboratories for analysis.

IVL is co-owner of the R&D facility Hammarby Sjöstadsverk, which is to be used as the demonstration site in Sweden within R3Water. It is a platform for development and exchange of knowledge and technologies within water treatment technology. The facility contributes to a profiling and increase of know-how related to water/environmental technology and thus enhances professional development.

The Society for Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology e.V. is an interdisciplinary scientific society with more than 5,800 personal and institutional members (including about 500 SMEs), whose activities cover wide areas relevant to the process industries.

DECHEMA is dedicated to the support of R&D progress, implementation and innovation realization in various fields of chemical engineering, environmental protection (esp. industrial water management) and biotechnology. DECHEMA’s work is supported by close to 100 working groups covering experts from academia, industry and the public sector. DECHEMA is board member of the European Technology Platform Sustainable Chemistry (SusChem), hosts the secretariat for the national SusChemD platform and is member of the EWP. Aquafin was founded by the Flemish Government in 1990 as the contract holder for the sewage treatment infrastructure in Flanders (5,9 million inhabitants). As a utility company Aquafin’s primary task is the accelerated realisation and operation of the sewage treatment infrastructure in Flanders. Currently Aquafin is responsible for the operation of 281 waste water treatment plants.

Over a period of twenty years, the company evolved from a new player in the sector into a many-faceted partner for all the actors involved in the implementation of an integrated water policy in Flanders. Aquafin is also a much sought after partner in research projects, both in Belgium and abroad, which are aimed at implementing the European Water framework directive.

The R&D department consists of 30 full time equivalents of which 20 university level. Aquafin is engaged as Belgium’s representative at EUREAU, the European organisation of the Water Operators, reflecting its active commitment for water policy issues.


Aqua-Q AB is a cleantech private entrepreneur SME of Sweden which offers innovative products/processes and services within on-line detection of biological contamination and ozone water disinfection systems. Aqua-Q offers quality control of recycled water, treated water and source water as well as related services such as consulting and water analyses.

The company was founded 1992. The management of Aqua-Q has more than 20 years of field experience in the water management with specific expertise in the real time detection, evaluation and analyses of micro contaminants in a flow of water as well as action plan.

Improved surveillance systems are needed to detect any sudden deterioration in water quality. Aqua-Q’s real time monitoring system, AQUATRACK™, is optimized among other features to give immediate alarm when, accidently or for any reason, the disinfection of the recycled water has failed.


The Catalan Institute for Water Research (ICRA) is a centre created for research and innovation in the sustainable use of water. It is a multidisciplinary water research centre around three main research areas: i) Resources and Ecosystems ii) Water Quality and iii) Technologies and Evaluation.

The research area of Technologies and Evaluation (participating in R3-Water) is leaded by Professor Ignasi Rodriguez-Roda and develops and evaluates methodologies and technologies for optimizing resources and energy efficiency in processes related to the urban water system (water supply, wastewater treatment, water reclamation, and reuse). Sustainability considerations guide the research of the group all along. There is a strong research team involved in R3-Water which is composed by one senior researcher (Professor Rodriguez-Roda) and three consolidated researchers (Dr. Lluís Corominas, Dr. Maite Pijuan and Dr. Oriol Gutierrez) who joined ICRA after consolidating their research careers outside Europe.


Teqma is an SME that acts as technology transfer of a different number of European companies developing equipment and technology for applications in water and waste treatment. Since its establishment in 2000 it has been successful in applying those technologies to the actual demands of the Spanish sectors related with water and wastewater treatment. Teqma is especially devoted to the implementation of water disinfection and wastewater reclamation solutions in municipal and industrial applications. It has developed the DOSCONTROL subsystem.


Perlemax Ltd (PML) is a spin out company from the University of Sheffield. It owns the patented technology exploiting the generation of micro-bubbles by virtue of fluidic oscillation. This energy efficient micro-bubble generation system produces micro-bubbles with the same volumetric flow rate as steady flow. PML has had the support of the University’s technology exploitation partner FusionIP  (www.fusionip.co.uk) .   PML has partners in many sectors of the waste water industry and has conducted trials at a major water treatment sites in the UK. PML has partnerships in other sectors such as algae growth and Anaerobic Digestion which all use the energy efficient micro bubble generation technology to improve gas transfer.


AVA GmbH core competency is planning, installation, financing and running of AVA GmbH HTC plants for the production of biochar and treatment of bio waste. The plants can be either bought by clients or be installed and operated on clients’ industrial site by AVA GmbH. A second major area of AVA GmbH is continuous research and further improvement of the hydrothermal carbonisation technology together with waste and recycling management. AVA GmbH has set up research relationships with several international research institutes and universities, such as the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Karlsruhe (Germany), the Fraunhofer Institute and University of Hohenheim in Stuttgart (Germany) and the ZHAW, Zürich (Switzerland).


Prediktor is a 17-year-old company, founded on industrial experience. The company has 50 employees with 4 – 35 years’ work experience, including 1 Adjunct professor, 5 persons holding PhDs, while the remaining are mostly holding master and bachelor degrees. Prediktor’s business areas are:

  • Industrial IT/MES solutions and services based on the APIS Software suite, including tools for data collection and real-time optimization and model-based analysis, estimation and control
  • Advanced online spectroscopic instruments.
  • Core competence and services offered within Industrial IT, model-based control/estimation and analytical and other online instrumentation

The APIS product suite includes among others, functionalities for historical data storage, classic and Model-based Predictive Control (MPC), material tracking, Kalman filtering and estimation, block oriented programming and logics realization, and much more (see www.prediktor.no).

Prediktor will supply the project with their APIS software, to be used at the case studies for data handling and implementation of monitoring and control solutions.
